Your server's backups live under Backups in the left sidebar, not in Files. From there you can create a backup on demand, restore a previous one, or download a backup to your computer. Always take a fresh backup before any risky change (modpack update, version change, seed reset), and restore from Backups. Never by manually deleting or renaming world folders unless you know exactly what you're doing.
Symptoms
- You updated a modpack or server version and lost items, blocks, or your whole world.
- You deleted or renamed a world folder and now the server won't start, or generated the wrong world.
- You want a copy of your world for singleplayer but can't find a download button in Files.
- The server won't come back online and you need to roll back to an earlier working state.
Why this happens
Most world-loss incidents in support chats trace back to the same pattern: someone edits or deletes world files directly instead of using backups, or updates a modpack/version without backing up first. A common mistake is renaming the world folder to change the seed, but accidentally renaming or overwriting the very folder that held the backup, permanently losing items. Another frequent cause is updating a modpack with "delete existing files" selected, which wipes inventories and structures that weren't part of the pack itself. Version upgrades can also auto-convert your world in a way that's hard to reverse without a backup, especially when a new version drops support for something you depend on, like crossplay compatibility.
Always create a manual backup immediately before updating a modpack, changing versions, or resetting a world. It takes one click and it's the only real undo button you have.
How to fix it
- Open your server and click Backups in the left sidebar.
- To protect yourself before a risky change, click to create a new backup now and wait for it to finish.
- To restore, find the backup with the date/time you want (each entry is timestamped) and choose the restore option. Confirm: this will replace your current world with that backup's state.
- Restart the server from the top-bar Restart button so the restored data loads cleanly.
- If you only want a copy of your world (for singleplayer or safekeeping), open Backups, pick the relevant entry, and use the download option: do not look in Files for this.
- If you renamed a world and things look broken, check Server Properties to confirm the world name field matches the actual folder name in the restored backup. A mismatch here will make the server load the wrong or a fresh world.
- If a modpack update wiped items or blocks, restore your pre-update backup, reinstall the modpack again through Modpack Installer without selecting any "delete existing files" option, and check that mod files aren't empty afterward.
- If the server won't start after a restore and appears stuck, check Console for errors, then try starting again: if it's still stuck, that's a sign to contact support directly.
Still stuck?
