How to Install Mods on Your Valheim Server

Valheim · 1 min read · ThundraNode Support

Most Valheim mods run through BepInEx, a modding framework that loads mod files into the game. You don't install BepInEx manually, it's a toggle in your panel.

Enable BepInEx

  1. Open Startup.
  2. Enable BepInEx.
  3. Save and restart the server.

After the restart, a BepInEx folder appears in your file list, ready for mods.

Add a mod

  1. Open Files.
  2. Navigate into BepInEx, then plugins.
  3. Upload the mod's .dll file (and any other files it comes with) into plugins.
  4. Restart the server.

Most mods are downloaded as a zip file. Extract it first and look inside for the actual .dll file, sometimes it's nested inside its own BepInEx/plugins folder structure that you'll need to copy from, not upload as-is.

Confirm it loaded

Open Console right after the restart. Mods that loaded successfully usually print their name and version near the top of the log. If a mod is missing from that list, it didn't load.

Still stuck?

Mod doesn't appear in the console log at all: confirm the .dll file actually landed in BepInEx/plugins, not a subfolder or the wrong location. A zip extracted without checking its internal folder structure is the most common cause.

Console shows an error mentioning the mod: it usually names a missing dependency (another mod or library it needs installed alongside it) or a version mismatch. Check the mod's own page for what else it requires, and confirm your game version matches what the mod supports, see How to Update Your Server.

Still not working: open a support ticket with your server ID and which mod you're trying to install, and we'll check the logs on our end.
