Valheim servers update through Steam whenever they restart, so you're always on the current version without needing to trigger anything manually.
How it works
Every time the server restarts, it checks for a newer version and installs it automatically before starting back up. A routine restart, one you do on purpose or one after a crash, is all it takes.
Forcing an update right now
If a new Valheim update just released and you want it immediately rather than waiting for your next planned restart, just restart the server from the panel. It'll pick up the new version on the way back up.
When an update breaks a mod
Major Valheim updates occasionally change things mods depend on, meaning a mod that worked fine yesterday can fail to load or cause crashes right after an update. This is normal, and it's the mod that needs to catch up, not something wrong with your server.
- Check Console after the update for errors mentioning the affected mod.
- Check the mod's own page for a version update that supports the new game version.
- Until an updated version is available, either remove the mod temporarily or hold off restarting further if you need to keep playing on the older version a little longer.
Still stuck?
If the server won't start at all after an update, check Console for the actual error rather than guessing. If you can't make sense of it, open a support ticket with your server ID and we'll take a look.
