How to Become Admin on Your Valheim Server

Valheim · 1 min read · ThundraNode Support

There's no in-game debug menu in vanilla Valheim, and no admin dashboard either. Everything runs through console commands, and the only thing gating those commands is whether your Steam ID is on the server's admin list.

Add yourself to the admin list

  1. Open Files.
  2. Navigate to .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/adminlist.txt.
  3. Right click the file and choose Edit.
  4. Paste your SteamID64 on its own line. Add one per line if you're adding more than one person.
  5. Save and close.
  6. Restart the server.

Once it's back up, admin commands will work for every Steam ID on that list.

Open the console and use commands

  1. In-game, press F5 to open the console.
  2. Type a command and press Enter.

A few genuinely useful ones to start with:

  • help: lists every available command.
  • god: makes your character invincible.
  • ghost: enemies stop noticing you.
  • heal: instantly restores health, stamina, and hunger.
  • pos: shows your current coordinates, useful for finding your way back somewhere.
  • goto x y z: teleports you to coordinates.
  • save: force-saves the world immediately, don't wait for the auto-save.
  • kick <name>: removes a player from the server without banning them.
  • ban <name>: bans a player. See How to Ban and Unban Players for the file-based method too.

That's a small slice of what's available. For the complete list, see Cheat Commands List.

Still stuck?

If commands don't respond at all in the console, confirm you restarted the server after editing adminlist.txt, that's the most common cause. If your Steam ID is correct and it's still not working, open a support ticket with your server ID from the Dashboard.
